Derbyshire Oatcakes
Ian Barratt reckons that cooking with AvantiGas LPG is one of the reasons his traditional Derbyshire Oatcakes are proving such a hit. They even tempted TV’s Nadiya Hussain to sample them in her latest BBC series.
The challenge
Ian has just had his third one-tonne LPG bulk tank installed, because as well as fuelling heating for his farmhouse and heating for cooking bakery, LPG also fuels a holiday cottage and heats the toilet block on his campsite too. Ian needs a reliable and cost-effective service for his isolated spot at Owlgreave Farm, Combs, near Chapel-en-le-Frith – and he has been an AvantiGas customer since the company was founded: “I’ve always been very well looked after,” he said. Dependable LPG is essential. AvantiGas has to power Ian’s gargantuan, vintage, 18-foot hotplate, with its gas jets underneath cooking up to five dozen oatcakes at a time, fulfilling orders of 2-300 dozen a day.
What we did
We’ve been providing Ian with a reliable source of heat and power for more than six years, earning his loyalty with consistently great service and competitive prices. AvantiGas also recently installed a third one-tonne tank to meet the growing demands of Ian’s thriving business.

The results
Ian and his team now supply Derbyshire Oatcakes to shops, bakeries and restaurants across three counties, and he will need to keep the flame under that griddle burning bright after attracting Bake Off star Nadiya Hussain to the High Peak to sample his wares.
Nadiya was filming for her BBC2 TV series Nadiya’s British Food Adventure, where she tours the country seeking out regional specialities and local food heroes. Click here to watch full episodes.
